The Vitra Sunflower clock is a striking and iconic interior design element designed by George Nelson in 1958. The Sunflower clock represents mid-century modern style, and its materials, ash and metal, make it timeless and elegant. The design language of the watch is bold, but at the same time appropriately restrained, which makes it suitable for a wide range of interior styles. This clock is not just a time teller, but also a work of art on the wall.
In 1947, American designer George Nelson was commissioned to create a watch collection. While studying the way people use clocks, Nelson discovered that seeing the time is based on interpreting the relative positions of the hands, in which case numbers are not necessary. Since most people wore wristwatches, he felt that watches functioned more as decorative elements.
From these thoughts was born the first clock collection launched in 1949, which had 14 completely different wall and table clocks without numbers. The watches had diversity in shapes, colors and materials. Over the next 35 years, Nelson Associates designed more than a hundred different clocks. After Nelson's death in 1986, his archive was transferred to the Vitra Design Museum, which began reproducing these watches in 1999 and has since expanded the collection. Today, Vitra offers a wide selection of high-quality quartz watches for different tastes and styles.
