The chair was designed together with an armchair for the Domus Academica student dormitory in 1946. The stackable Domus chair was created to suit both studying and dining. The chair was Finland's first post-war export success, also known as "The Finn Chair". The distributor of the chair in the large American market was Knoll.

The chair brought success to its designer and Tapiovaara received, among other things, the Good Design award in Chicago in 1950 and gold at the Triennale in Milan the following year. Since 2010, the Domus chair has had its rightful place in Artek's collections alongside other Ilmari Tapiovaara classics.
