The Artek Domus chair is a masterpiece of modern furniture design. The chair's short armrests offer a surprising amount of support and enable the chair to be placed close to the table. The chair is so comfortable that it tempts you to sit for a longer time. The modest wooden chair became an international sales success already 70 years ago. The chair was designed together with an armchair for the Domus Academica student dormitory in 1946. The stackable Domus chair was created to suit both studying and dining. The chair was Finland's first post-war export success, also known as "The Finn Chair". The distributor of the chair in the large American market was Knoll.
The chair brought success to its designer and Tapiovaara received, among other things, the Good Design award in Chicago in 1950 and gold at the Triennale in Milan the following year. Since 2010, the Domus chair has had its rightful place in Artek's collections alongside other Ilmari Tapiovaara classics. Both the Domus chair and the armchair share the same recognizable shape and short armrests.
