TON - The beauty of bent wood
TON believes that bending wood is the key to its durability. Beauty and durability, on the other hand, make the product timeless. TON products are a legacy from one generation to another, in the same way as skillful craftsmanship. TON bends its furniture manually in a workshop where the same technique has been used since 1861. However, the working methods have been developed and combined with the ideas of today's designers. TON tables and chairs are a combination of quality, innovative shapes and a legacy of understanding wood as a material for generations.
TON's story began in 1861, when a furniture factory was opened in Bystřice pod Hostýneme, which today is one of the oldest in the world. However, it is no coincidence that Michael Thonet, the founder of the factory, after whom the company was named, chose this very place. As the surrounding beech forest provided enough material for manufacturing, extra transport and labor fees were saved.
In 1912, the company produced 445,000 products a year, at the same time the factory employed 2,000 people. In 1953, THONET became an international company. The new name for the company was TON, which is an abbreviation of the Czech name Továrna Ohýbaného Nábytku – bent furniture factory.
